Each year, the Pantone Colour Institute Link announces the Colour of the Year. This year’s colour is Classic Blue. And, as home decor enthusiasts, we couldn’t be more excited by their choice.

Reminiscent of the sky at dusk, it’s a deep blue that’s elegant, sophisticated and oozes luxury. Its soothing qualities evoke feelings of peace and tranquillity. So, it’s an ideal colour choice for living rooms, bedrooms and bathrooms. And it’s said to aid concentration – perfect for a study or home office.

Here are 5 simple ways to introduce this classic shade of blue into your home decor.

In a bathroom

Classic blue will turn your bathroom into a tranquil oasis.

Painting or tiling one wall will work well if your bathroom suite is white or beige. Then add classic blue accessories, such as towels and vases, to bring it all together.  You could also try introducing it in your furniture and tiles.

We designed this bathroom with classic blue cabinets and tiles in the wet areas. We complemented the colour with a paler shade of blue and greys in the rest of the room.

As you can see, the the blue colour gives a striking effect without being overbearing.

This is an excellent option if you want to add classic blue without having to redecorate.

Choose the size of the furniture depending on how much of an effect you want to make. The bigger the furniture, the bolder the impact.

And the beauty of this colour is that it goes with almost any other colour, the same way black does. So, you can often mix it with the existing decor of your home.

We designed this teenager’s bedroom using classic blue cabinet doors. Teamed with subtle grey walls and bed coverings, the colour makes a statement without being over the top.

As an accent wall

Accent walls are a popular choice for adding colour due to their flexibility.

When choosing which wall to paint in classic blue, think about the impact you want to make. A large wall will make a significant impact. But if you’d prefer a more subtle approach go for a smaller wall or one that has something else in it to break the colour up.

Paint the other walls in complementary colours. Greys will give a sense of elegance, while pastels add softness. Classic blue will even blend well with bright colours such as yellow.

Whatever colour you choose, the dramatic deep hues of classic blue will create a cosy feeling.

To help tie the whole room together, use soft accents of classic blue in the accessories. In a bedroom, this could be pillows, curtains and lamps. In living areas use cushions, vases and artwork.

In patterned wallpaper

Patterned wallpaper is a fabulous way to introduce this shade of blue into your home.

Depending on the effect you’d like to create, you can choose to cover the whole room or just an accent wall.

Then think about the design of the wallpaper itself. Some have classic blue as the main colour, while others have a mix of different colours.

And there are so many designs to choose from. From geometric patterns and stripes to nautical themes and floral designs. This makes introducing it into your home easy, whatever your style.

As an area rug

If you like to update your colour scheme often, an easy way to do it is by adding the new colour in a rug.

For maximum impact, get a classic blue rug that’s big enough to sit underneath the furniture. Not only will it bring a vibrant feel to your room, it will also draw the eye wider and make the room feel bigger.

If the walls are a light colour, you can add other classic blue textiles and accessories to tie it all together. But, if the walls are darker, try adding some light accessories to add contrast and prevent the room feeling too dark.
